Backed by AWS, Databricks and IBM, the new centralized data platform will serve as the core technology infrastructure for Vietcombank’s data journey.

Vietcombank (Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam) has launched the Vietcombank Data Program in partnership with FPT Corporation and TechX Joint Stock Company. Over the next 24 months, the program will build the Vietcombank One Data Platform (ODP), a modern, centralized data platform that will serve as the bank’s core technology infrastructure and the foundation for managing and unlocking value from data across the organization. Three global technology companies, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Databricks and IBM, are also participating, providing technology advisory, infrastructure, platforms and data services.

The kick-off ceremony was attended by Vietcombank Chief Executive Officer Le Quang Vinh, members of the bank’s Board of Management, the Project Implementation Committee and representatives of relevant departments. Representing the implementation partners were Nguyen Hoang Minh, CEO of FPT IS, a member of FPT Corporation, and Ngo Manh Ha, CEO of TechX and Project Director. Also in attendance were Niall Reilly, Head of Data Solutions for ASEAN at AWS; Cecily Ng, Vice President and General Manager for ASEAN and Greater China at Databricks; and Truong Nguyen Phat, General Manager of IBM Vietnam.

Opening the ceremony, Tran Thanh Nam, Director of the Data Division and Chief AI Officer at Vietcombank and Head of the Project Implementation Committee, outlined the program’s place in the bank’s data and digital transformation strategy: “The project will build a centralized, modern and scalable data platform that supports our reporting and advanced analytics needs and is ready for AI and machine learning in the years ahead. It will also bring modern practices to the way we manage and use data.”

A phased roadmap

The program follows a 24-month roadmap to create a single platform that connects, governs and makes use of data consistently across the bank. In the first six months, FPT and TechX will build the core platform and deliver a set of real-world use cases to prove its value before it is scaled up bank-wide.

The next phase will extend the platform to more areas of the business. At the same time, technology will be transferred to Vietcombank’s team, which will take ownership of running and developing the system. This approach is designed to deliver value early while keeping the platform secure, efficient and sustainable over the long term.

Governance and delivery

The project runs on a One Team model, with Vietcombank and its implementation partners each setting up a Project Implementation Committee, a Project Management Office (PMO) and dedicated delivery teams. Platform development, use cases, MLOps and data governance are delivered using Agile methods, quality is managed through the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle of continuous improvement, and progress is tracked against defined acceptance milestones.

FPT and TechX are the lead implementation partners, responsible end to end for assessment, architecture design, platform deployment and integration, testing, training and handover. AWS will provide elastically scalable cloud infrastructure, together with compute, storage, security and AI-ready services. Databricks will provide the data, AI and analytics platform, while IBM will deliver data governance capabilities through watsonx.data intelligence to ensure the platform meets governance and compliance requirements.

Addressing the ceremony, Vietcombank CEO Le Quang Vinh said: “We expect the project to draw on the experience of our implementation partners to deliver results effectively. That requires close, transparent and accountable coordination between Vietcombank and the delivery teams, and a strong focus on knowledge transfer so that we steadily build a team able to run, use and develop the ODP on our own. Above all, the active and continuous involvement of our business divisions from the very start will be decisive for the quality and impact of the project.”

The ceremony concluded with the formal handover of the signed contract between Vietcombank and its implementation partners, witnessed by Vietcombank’s leadership and senior executives from the technology companies. The project now moves directly into the assessment and design phase, with key milestones agreed between Vietcombank and its partners for the full implementation lifecycle.
